Hepatoprotective effect: The natural ingredients of Liv.52 show powerful hepatoprotective properties against chemical-induced hepatotoxicity. It restores the functional efficiency of the liver, protecting the liver parenchyma and promoting hepatocellular regeneration. The antiperoxidative activity of Liv.52 prevents the loss of functional integrity of the cell membrane, supports cytochrome P-450 (a large and diverse group of enzymes that catalyse the oxidation of organic substances), accelerates the period of healing and ensures early recovery of hepatic function in infectious hepatitis. It promotes rapid excretion of acetaldehyde (formed by oxidation of ethanol, which is commonly thought to cause hangover) and provides protection against alcohol-induced liver damage. Liv.52 also reduces lipotropic effects (compounds that help catalyse fat breakdown) in chronic alcoholism and prevents fatty liver infiltration. In precirrhotic conditions Liv.52 stops the progression of cirrhosis and prevents further liver damage.
Improves appetite: With anorexia and less than optimal weight gain and growth, Liv.52 normalises the basic appetite-satiety rhythm. It also helps with loss of appetite during pregnancy. As a daily supplement, Liv.52 improves appetite, digestion and absorption processes and promotes weight gain.
- Chicory – protects the liver against alcohol toxicity. It is also a powerful antioxidant, as can be seen from its free radical scavenging properties and has hepatoprotective properties.
- Caper shrub – are powerful hepatoprotectors. They inhibit the increased levels of malondialdehyde (a biomarker of oxidative stress) in plasma and liver cells. The flavonoids contained in capers have significant antioxidant properties and also reduce the levels of ALT and AST enzymes and improve the functional efficiency of the liver.

Liv.52 was released in 1955 and millions of doctors worldwide recommend Liv.52 (in tablet, syrup and drop form) for various liver conditions. Liv.52 is a thoroughly studied product of The Himalaya Drug Company. Various clinical studies, such as open clinical trials, randomised controlled trials, meta-analysis and clinical trials initiated by independent investigators (including those abroad) have shown that Liv.52 is beneficial in various liver diseases. The product has more than 300 research articles published in scientific journals.
Every herbal ingredient in Liv.52 has been analysed according to the standards set by the Pharmacopoeia. A battery of non-clinical toxicology studies (acute, sub-acute, chronic, genotoxicity, developmental and reproductive toxicity studies) have further strengthened the safety of Liv.52, and by a wide margin. We guarantee consistent quality in every batch (according to WHO standards for herbal medicines). Himalaya’s production facilities are GMP-certified and are regularly inspected by several regulatory authorities worldwide, wherever our products are sold. In addition, The Himalaya Drug Company’s advanced research and development (R&D) centre is certified for Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) to comply with international OECD guidelines.
With regard to heavy metals, given some trace levels of heavy metals naturally occurring in botanicals/plants/food ingredients, many regulatory bodies have defined allowable limits for heavy metals in herbal medicines after considering the epidemiological aspects of such contamination. In this direction, WHO and AYUSH have defined heavy metal limits (NMT 10 ppm lead) in Ayurvedic preparations. We, at The Himalaya Drug Company, follow these guidelines for all our medicines and ensure that our products comply with these norms. In addition, we follow the quality guidelines published by major regulatory bodies such as USFDA (12.5 µg/day lead), Health Canada (10 µg/day lead), HSA Singapore (10 ppm lead) etc. to ensure high quality products. The table below shows the permissible levels of heavy metals set by various international agencies and Liv.52 complies with all the listed standards.
