Bajaj Auto was established on November 29, 1945 as M/s Bachraj Trading Corporation Private Limited. Initially, the company imported and sold two-wheelers and three-wheelers in India. In 1959, the company obtained a license from the Government of India to manufacture two-wheelers and three-wheelers and a license from Piaggio to manufacture Vespa scooters in India. In 1960, the company became a publicly traded company.

In 2007, Bajaj Auto, through its Dutch subsidiary Bajaj Auto International Holding BV, acquired a 14.5% stake in Austrian rival KTM, gradually increasing its stake to 48% non-controlling by 2020. In 2017, Bajaj Auto and Triumph Motorcycles Ltd merged to create mid-engine motorcycles.
