Jawa was a motorcycle manufacturer in the Czech Republic. ‘Ja’ of Janeček and ‘Wa’ of Wanderer Werke AG created the brand as we know it today – Jawa – in 1929. The motorcycle brand was born under the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia as a project run undercover with the efforts of founder František Janeček.
Jawa was brough to India by Farrokh K Irani and Rustom S Irani and was renamed ‘Yezdi’ for a dash of Indian flavour. A factory to produce Yezdi motorcycles was set up near Mysore Junction in 1961. By far, one of the most popular motorcycles that kept Jawa Yezdi alive in Indians’ minds was the Jawa 250.
