Arambol is exactly the place where everyone can be absolutely themselves. Here norms and standards give way to individuality and creativity. This is where one finds refuge and freedom of self-expression. In February, one of the most colorful and unusual events – Freak Parade – breaks out in Goa.
Strolling through the narrow streets, you will meet those who dress up in the most incredible costumes and party along the coast with music and dancing, and then build bonfires and continue celebrating until the morning. The Freak Parade has no official status and the authorities are keen to ban it, so the exact dates of the event remain a secret until the last moment. However, one thing is known: it is always February.
How’s the parade going
Many adorn their bodies with tattoos like works of art, hair braided into braids or dreadlocks adorned with shells and brass beads. There is no room for prejudice or judgment – everyone is accepted and respected exactly as they choose to be. And once a year, all these unique individuals come together to present themselves to the world.
The Arambol Village Freak Parade is a colorful event that takes place along the coast towards Mandrem Beach to the sound of loud music. The procession is led by an impressive chariot, but instead of the pathos of the Brazilian Carnival, there is an atmosphere of freedom from standards and rules, so typical of the hippie celebrations of the 70s.
Each year’s holiday has a theme, and while it is encouraged to match the costume to that theme, it is not required. The more colorful and unusual, yet simple, the better. Many tourists join the parade, wearing only a mask and staying in their regular clothes.
The parade continues until late in the evening. At the end point, often in a street café, participants light bonfires, have a fire show, dance and party until nightfall.
There is no room for prejudice here, only open acceptance and admiration before the creativity of every soul. Freedom of expression knows no bounds here: giant earrings, colorful hair and various facial piercings are all a standard part of Arambol’s atmosphere. This is the place where you can be exactly yourself, where everyone finds their family, even if they consider themselves a “freak”. This corner is always ready to open its arms and let you sparkle with your unique brightness. In Arambol, it is impossible to be discouraged – smiles accompany you everywhere.
