Lambretta, a brand of scooters manufactured in Milan, Italy by Innocenti, began manufacturing Lambretta scooters in 1947.
The name comes from the word Lambrate, a suburb of Milan named after the river Lambro that runs through the area, and where the factory was located. Lambratta is the name of a mythical waterman associated with the river that flows near the former manufacturing site. In 1972, the Indian government bought the equipment of the Milan factory, setting up Scooters India Limited (SIL) to manufacture Lambretta scooters as well as Lambro three-wheeled motorcycles, the latter under the name Vikram for the domestic market. Lambretta scooters were also produced under license by Fenwick in France, NSU in Germany, Serveta in Spain, API in India, Yulon in Taiwan, Pasco in Brazil, Auteco in Colombia and Siambretta in Argentina.
