Founded by Michel Leclerc in 1976, Decathlon began with a store in Lille, France. Its holding company was formerly known as Oxylane.

Decathlon is a French sporting goods retailer. With more than 2,082 stores in 79 countries and regions (2024), it is the world’s largest sporting goods retailer. The company manages the research, design, manufacturing, logistics and distribution of its products in-house, partners with global suppliers and sells its own brands directly to consumers in large stores under the Decathlon brand.

The retailer sells a wide range of sporting goods, from tennis rackets to state-of-the-art scuba diving equipment, typically in large supermarkets averaging 4,000 m2 in size. Decathlon Group sells its products under more than 20 brands. The company employs more than 93,710 employees.
